Comer frutos secos regularmente puede ser beneficioso de manera indirecta para la salud cardiaca, publica el Journal of the American College of Nutrition.
Científicos de la Universidad Estatal de Louisiana, Estados Unidos, midieron el consumo de almendras, nuez de Brasil, castañas, avellanas, pacanas, piñones, pistachos y nueces por parte de 13 mil 292 voluntarios de ambos sexos mayores de 19 años.
Entre ellos los investigadores analizaron la aparición y prevalencia de factores de riesgo para la función cardiaca como diabetes tipo II, hipercolesterolemia, y proteína C reactiva, y los compararon con la cantidad de frutos secos que ingenian a diario.
Quienes comían 7 gramos o más durante 24 horas tuvieron mayores niveles de lipoproteínas de alta densidad (colesterol bueno) y menores de proteína C reactiva (indicadora de inflamaciones, que a su vez pueden ocasionar males cardiacos).
Adicionalmente hallaron que los consumidores de esos alimentos tenían un menor peso corporal, menos índice de masa corporal y una circunferencia de cintura más pequeña que los no consumidores, escribió la doctora Carol O'Neil.
"La ingestión de estos frutos secos está asociado a 5 por ciento menos de prevalencia de síndrome metabólico, un grupo de factores de riesgo que ocurren juntos e incrementan las probabilidades de obstrucción de arterias coronarias, enfermedad cerebrovascular y diabetes tipo 2", concluyeron los científicos.
Ese síndrome está integrado por la obesidad abdominal, hipertensión, altos niveles de glucosa en ayunas y bajos niveles de colesterol de lipoproteína de baja densidad (colesterol bueno). Fuente: PL
